The film is set in an impoverished community on the Pine Ridge Oglala Lakota reservation, where it tells the casually interlocking stories of Bill and Matho. Precocious Matho is 12 old, obsessed with magic, has a crush on a girl from school and loves skateboarding and video games, while 23 years old Bill is a flirt who loves hip-hop, smoking weed and finding ways to make a quick buck. They’re typical boys with typical interests, but beneath this veneer of playfulness and normalcy, they’re faced with the systemic issues commonly present on reservations: racism, abuse, drug use, hunger and extreme poverty. Bound by their shared search for belonging, each of the boys grapple with identity, family and loss, as they navigate their unique paths to manhood.
