The Artist Was Given A Plaque By The Birol Cinema Actros Association To Celebrate His 60th Anniversary In Art

At the 61st International Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival on behalf of BİROY Cinema Professional Actors Union, Göksel Kortay was presented with a plaque celebrating his 60th year in art after the Turkish premiere of the film “Fidan” in which he was a part of the cast.

Göksel Kortay was applauded for minutes by the audience when he received his plaque at the ceremony attended by festival director Deniz Yavuz on behalf of Altın Portakal and Renan Bilek on behalf of Biroy. There were emotional moments in the hall where the crew and audience of the film Fidan were present.

Who is Göksel Kortay?

Education

Born in Istanbul on April 6, 1939, the artist graduated from Robert College and went to the USA with a Fulbright scholarship to continue his education. After graduating from Bennington College Summer School, he graduated with a master’s degree from Boston University’s Theater and Television Department and then received a diploma in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan.

Professional Art Life

After completing his education, he worked as both an actor and director in many theaters in the USA where he stayed for 6.5 years. His last job before returning to Istanbul was the production manager of the programs “Say When” and “Tonight Show” broadcast on NBC. After returning, he worked at Kenter Theater and worked as a program specialist at TRT Radio. He directed radio plays and produced tourism and youth programs. Göksel Kortay worked at various theaters including Dormen Theater, Altan Erbulak-Metin Serezli Theater, Nisa Serezli-Tolga Aşkıner Theater, Gönül Ülkü-Gazanfer Özcan Theater and Kedi Theater. He wrote, directed and voiced a bank’s children’s programs on the radio for 17 years. In 1970, he performed in Dormen Theater’s play “A Tale of Istanbul” in Rome and at the Aldwych Theater in London. In 1978, he performed Necati Cumalı’s play “Nalınlar” in English at the Old Vic Theater in London with the “International Istanbul Player” troupe. They achieved a first in the world by performing a play written in another language by a group whose native language is not English in England and in English. They went on a month-long tour with the same play in cities such as Norwich, New Castle and Hull. The artist met with the audience with his last play, Kibrilık Budalası at Kedi Tiyatro, by taking part in 740 performances over a period of 10 years, and he played the character of “grandmother”, one of the important roles in the film FİDAN, produced by Yeditepe Film, written and directed by Ayçıl Yeltan, which will have its Turkish premiere at the 61st Antalya International Golden Orange Film Festival and its European premiere at CINEMED, with a shocking transformation.

Göksel Kortay, who has been continuing his art life uninterruptedly since 1964, has been working as a lecturer at Müjdat Gezen Art Center for nearly twenty years. He has given lectures at Doğuş University and Kadir Has University from time to time. He has staged over thirty plays that he has translated into Turkish. The artist, who took part in nearly twenty films and many television series, played in approximately 150 theater plays, was the president of the Theater Actors Association (TODER) for twelve years and the president of the Afife Jale Theater Awards jury for five years.
