In his debut feature, The Particle (Zerre), Erdem Tepegöz told the story of people whose lives are as inconsequential as dust particles floating in the air. In the Shadows, which he also wrote, is his follow-up to The Particle. Again, there are expendable lives. The character played by Numan Acar—an actor with credits on several American TV series— is, like Jale Arıkan’s factory worker, on a fearless quest for meaning and freedom. The backdrop is a factory zone controlled by primitive technology where workers are under the constant watch of surveillance cameras. When one of them rebels and questions the system, a group of fellow-workers take exception. Shot over five weeks in a mining town in Georgia, Tepegöz’s offbeat sci-fi drama takes a skeptical look at a dystopian world.
Born in 1982, Tepegöz graduated from the Dokuz Eylul University Department of Economics. He studied film directing in Prague. The Particle (Zerre), his debut film as writer-director, won 23 awards and the film screened in 30 countries. He is currently working on a Master’s degree in Anthropology at Yeditepe University. In the Shadow (Gölgeler İçinde) is his second feature film.
