The countdown has begun to the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, which opens its 57th edition, chaired by the Mayor of Antalya, Muhittin Böcek, on October 3, 2020. As part of the final Festival preparations, the much-anticipated jury line-ups have been announced for the Festival’s national competitions. This year, the National Feature Film Competition will be presided over by screenwriter, actor, director and author, Ercan Kesal. He will be joined on the jury by: screenwriter, journalist, author and actor, Gülse Birsel; screenwriter and director, Kıvanç Sezer; actor and voice-over artist, Taner Birsel; and the journalist, author and theater critic, Zeynep Oral.
The jury for the National Documentary Film Competition, for which 10 titles have been selected, is made up of Bingöl Elmas, Köken Ergun and Kurtuluş Özgen, while the 12 shortlisted films in the National Short Film Competition will be judged by Cemre Ebuzziya, Müge Turan and Ömür Atay.
Ercan Kesal to Chair National Feature Film Competition Jury
The jury presiding over the National Feature Film Competition of the Festival—an event supported by the Turkish Ministry of Culture & Tourism—will this year be chaired by Ercan Kesal, a multi-faceted filmmaker and writer who has won multiple national and international awards for his work. Kesal began his film career as an actor in the feature film, Distant (Uzak), before diversifying into screenwriting with Three Monkeys (Üç Maymun) and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (Bir Zamanlar Anadolu’da). He has delivered memorable performances in a plethora of films—among them Vavien, Hair (Saç), Yozgat Blues, I Am Not Him (Ben O Değilim), Butterflies (Kelebekler) and Passed by Censor (Görülmüştür)—but has more recently moved into the director’s chair. To date, he has directed the short documentary Gone with the Hazelnuts (Fındıktan Sonra) and the feature film, You Know Him (Nasipse Adayız). The 12 competition films will be judged by four other jury members, who have been named as: screenwriter, journalist, author and actor, Gülse Birsel, who has won recognition for the television show, g.a.g., the television sitcom, The European Side (Avrupa Yakası)—which she wrote and starred in—for the TV series, Dust and Ashes (Yalan Dünya) and The Jet Set (Jet Sosyete), and for the hit film In the Family (Aile Arasında), which she wrote; director and screenwriter, Kıvanç Sezer, who picked up the Golden Orange Best First Feature Award and Dr. Avni Tolunay Special Jury Prize for his multi-award-winning debut film, My Father’s Wings (Babamın Kanatları), and presented La Belle Indifference (Küçük Şeyler), part two of an ongoing trilogy, at last year’s Festival where he once again won the Dr. Avni Tolunay Special Jury Prize; actor and voice-over artist, Taner Birsel, who has appeared in countless films, including A Run for Money (Kaç Para Kaç), Elephants and Grass (Filler ve Çimen), Confession (İtiraf), Cars of the Revolution (Devrim Arabaları), Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (Bir Zamanlar Anadolu’da) and Sideway (Yol Kenarı), as well as more than 40 productions for the Istanbul State Theater; and Zeynep Oral, the co-founder of Milliyet Arts magazine, President of PEN Turkey, journalist and columnist for Cumhuriyet newspaper, author and theater critic.
Short Film and Documentary Juries Unveiled
The jury of this year’s National Documentary Film Competition, for which 10 films have been shortlisted from 46 submissions, is comprised of: Bingöl Elmas, an author and director of many outstanding documentaries; Köken Ergun, a filmmaker who has earned international plaudits for his short films, documentaries and video work; and Kurtuluş Özgen, an academic and producer-director of award-winning documentaries. Turning to the Festival’s National Short Film Competition, the 12 titles selected from 206 submissions, will be considered by the following jury members: Cemre Ebuzziya, an actor who starred in last year’s A Tale of Three Sisters (Kız Kardeşler), Chronology (Kronoloji) and In Between (İki Arada); Müge Turan, a film critic and Film Curator for Istanbul Modern Cinema; and Ömür Atay, a director who won multiple awards for his most recent film, Brothers (Kardeşler), which world premiered at the 53rd Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
The juries for the National Feature Film, Documentary and Short FilmCompetitions will decide on the winners of a total TL860 thousand worth of prize money to be awarded by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality in support of the Turkish film industry.
FİLM-YÖN and SİYAD Awards to Continue
Both FİLM-YÖN, the Turkish Film Directors’ Guild, and SİYAD, the Turkish Film Critics’ Association, have also named their juries, which will decide on the winners of, respectively, the Best Director and Best Film Awards in the National Feature Film Competition. Çiğdem Vitrinel, Mustafa Kara and Tunç Davut make up the FİLM-YÖN jury, and Coşkun Çokyiğit, Gül Yaşartürk and Murat Tırpan the SİYAD jury.
The 57th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival is chaired by Muhittin Böcek, the Mayor of Antalya, and executive directed, as in 2019, by Cansel Çevikol Tuncer. Ahmet Boyacıoğlu resumes the role of Festival director and Başak Emre of artistic director, while Olena Yershova Yıldız once again takes the helm of the Antalya Film Forum. All competition awards will be presented at the Festival Closing Ceremony on the evening of Saturday, October 10.
